Welcome to O Cartaxeiro

Largo do Chafariz de Dentro 23, 1100-139 Lisboa, Portugal

General Info

O Cartaxeiro sits in a lively corner of Lisbon at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro 23, 1100-139, and it immediately feels like one of those traditional restaurants where the menu stays honest and focused on familiar Portuguese comfort food. The setting is simple but welcoming, and from the moment you arrive, the atmosphere gives off a relaxed neighborhood dining vibe that works well for both locals and visitors exploring the Alfama area.

Looking through the menu, the emphasis is clearly on seafood-driven dishes that reflect the character of the city. One of the most talked-about options is the Sardines with Potatoes, served in a straightforward style that highlights freshness over complexity. Alongside it, the Sardines Salad offers a lighter alternative, combining the same coastal flavor profile in a more refreshing form. Another standout for those who prefer something more filling is the Sea Bass with Rice, a comforting plate that feels balanced and satisfying without being overly heavy.

For those who enjoy something green on the table, the Large Salad Plus is a simple but generous option that fits well as either a starter or a shared dish. It adds a fresh contrast to the seafood-focused selections and helps round out the overall menu variety. To finish the meal, Baba de Camelo appears as the signature dessert, offering a sweet and creamy note that feels very traditional and ties the dining experience together in a familiar Portuguese way.

The service at O Cartaxeiro is straightforward and attentive, with table service that keeps the flow of the meal smooth without feeling rushed. Beverage choices are well represented with both beer and wine available, making it easy to pair drinks with the seafood dishes. The restaurant is also family-friendly, with a good-for-kids environment that makes it suitable for casual group meals or relaxed family outings. Clean restroom facilities add to the comfort, especially for longer dining visits.

In terms of overall experience, the restaurant gives off a grounded and authentic impression rather than anything overly polished or modern. It feels like a place where the focus stays on food quality and consistency rather than decoration. Reviews often highlight the dependable preparation of the sardines and the comforting nature of the rice-based dishes, which align with the expectations of a traditional Lisbon dining spot.

Whether stopping by after exploring nearby historic streets or planning a casual lunch, O Cartaxeiro fits naturally into the rhythm of the neighborhood. The combination of seafood dishes, simple salads, and classic dessert options makes it an easy choice for anyone looking to experience a straightforward and local-style restaurant in the heart of Lisbon.

What customers say?

“ A very good tasca in Lisbon. The grilled dourada was excellent, perfectly cooked and very fresh. The welcome was warm and friendly, with a relaxed, local atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Simple, honest Portuguese food, exactly what you expect from a good tasca. Would definitely come back! ”

“ The sardines were incredible! The food was cheap and delicious, cooked by the father on the tiny grill right inside the door. Very friendly and family run restaurant for traditional portuguese food. Would definitely eat here again. ”

“ This restaurant was the highlight of our trip. The food was fresh, perfectly seasoned and a lot of it. We also ordered the squid but I forgot to photograph it. The menu is only in Portuguese, we ordered off the pictures and we got the sea bass recommendation from the waiter. For your reference the restaurant is in the main square of Alfama district. In front of the fado museum. All of these food plus soft Drinks was about €36 and so worth it. You won’t find a meal like this in the main tourist areas on this price range. ”
